Therapy Dog Training

Tecla’s K-9 Academy offers a program to prepare owners and their dogs to become therapy dog teams. Prerequisites are: Obedience 1 or passing our Obedience 1 class test if you have taken an obedience class elsewhere and completing the AKC Canine Good Citizenʼs Test. Our trainer Tecla Walton is a CGC Evaluator and we offer this test throughout the year. Upon completion of these prerequisites you may enter our program which consists of 5 week course and 2 hours of observation of your and your dog in various public situations by one of our trainers. Upon completion of our program we will go with you to your interview with Pets on Wheels and you will begin the wonderful and fulfilling world of therapy dog work. (We are currently working towards having our own placement system with various nursing homes. Once this is in place we can send you and your dog out directly instead of through Pets on Wheels).
